Why is it a good idea to have a Sunrise and Sunset Yosemite Elopement?
I couldn’t think of a better way to commemorate your intimate elopement than having great photos to remember the special day. But what time of the day should you plan your ceremony to make it more special? Just imagine being able to spend hours enjoying every gorgeous spot of a dream elopement venue like Yosemite – the most beautiful place on Earth to have your newlywed portraits taken. You will be so glad you chose a sunrise or sunset Yosemite elopement because these times offer the most spectacular views that will take your breath away. Just make sure to plan it all out as some spots are at their most beautiful at sunrise, while others are particularly stunning at sunset. It’s a good idea to hire an experienced Yosemite elopement photographer, such as myself, who’s an expert at knowing which locations are best for what time of day. Here’s a quick breakdown to help you put together some ideas for your elopement day.
Sunrise Yosemite elopement
Maybe you see yourself saying your vows to the love of your life before the break of dawn at the most romantic spot of your choice in Yosemite. Who wouldn’t? The soft morning light exudes so much intimacy and warmth that it will make your images pop gorgeously. Here are some things to consider before you begin your elopement planning to have your ceremony at the crack of dawn:
Pros
- You can have a more intimate Yosemite elopement ceremony since you get to avoid the crowd.
- It is a great way to start the day. It’s like promising to watch every sunrise together until life’s sunset.
- Highly recommended if you want to have cooler weather.
- There’s nothing better than spending an entire day as a married couple in this lovely park.
Cons
- Waking up early. If you’re not a morning person, a sunrise Yosemite elopement may be a struggle for you.
- Hiking in the dark
- Cooler temperatures in the morning you will need layers
Best Spots For Eloping at Sunrise
This is my favorite spot for a sunrise elopement because of how dreamy the view is. It is also a short walk from the paved trail. Important: Glacier Point road is closed during 2022 for construction. Reachable through a long challenging hiking trail.
Cook’s Meadow & Sentinel Meadow
The soft light of the morning is just perfect for an intimate Yosemite elopement ceremony in the middle of a meadow surrounded by woodlands. Their iconic wooden walkways are incredible too!
Although it can be quite a hike to reach this place, and it’s only accessible from mid-April to mid-December, the magnificent rock formations look even more majestic when the sun starts to shine on them. Such a perfect scene for a Yosemite elopement.
Sunset Yosemite elopement
There’s an element of pure romance when you tie the knot while the sun slowly sets. The stunning display of light and color will surely fit your Sunset Yosemite elopement day, as no one can deny the beauty of a sunset. Read on to find out if this option is a better fit for you:
Pros
- You get to have an entire day to make sure that everything goes according to your elopement planning.
- The weather is nice and warm. Although, you may need to layer up when the sun has completely gone down.
- Enjoy a ceremony with an effortlessly romantic ambiance.
- It is a great way to end your Sunset Yosemite elopement – relaxing while watching the sunset with the person you’re now married to.
Cons
- Nature will be dictating your schedule. The sun won’t be waiting for you to be ready before it decides to disappear and you run out of light for your photos.
- The rest of the ceremony or your hike back will take place at night.
Best Spots For Eloping at Sunset
This place is the most popular location for a Sunset Yosemite elopement. The view is truly breathtaking, with that golden sunlight painting everything as the sun sets. Plus, you don’t have to go the distance to get there, it’s just a 1.2-mile hike from the parking lot.
A location that is accessible by car with a stunning view of the El Capitan or Cathedral Rock. Both make a perfect background for your ceremony.
In between Sunrise and Sunset
Yosemite has so many breathtaking views that you would want to explore as an eloped couple. Besides that, you can either make the most of your stay in this park by partaking in the fun activities it offers, or you can plan a small gathering with your closest loved ones at the lovely reception areas nearby.
Activities You Can Do
You can enjoy a range of activities throughout the day if you prefer to stay longer in the park or while waiting for the beautiful sunset. You can go hiking, go on tours, horseback riding, birdwatching, or enjoy a picnic. Choose the activity that best fits your schedule to avoid missing out on that majestic golden hour.
Reception Area Near Yosemite Park
Although this park is 750,000 acres, there are not many areas dedicated for a reception. Don’t worry! I’ve listed the most recommended places for you to consider as you finalize your elopement planning.
This charming rustic venue will complete your entire Yosemite experience. Plus, you don’t even have to leave the park.
An extraordinary Sierra resort located 7.6 miles from the park is just the perfect place to celebrate.
If you prefer a more luxurious experience, you can go 18 miles further from the park to find this fairytale-like reception.

Your photos are stunning! This guide is super helpful – I just visited Taft Point for the first time at sunset recently and the views were out of this world!
RIGHT!!! I had to take a moment because it was beautiful with the light and vastness. My husband and I were just standing there for a sec then he felt vertigo kick in. He said, “Worth it!”
Thank you so much Paige. I’m glad this guide is helpful. I completely agree with you the views are out of this world. I love Yosemite so much.
